Chris Cady, who performed at one of our Valentine's dinners, is part of The Black Asters.
Based out of Spearfish, SD, The Black Asters are a former collaboration revived and refined. Two long-time besties, Emily Ahrendt (vocals, ukulele) and Chris Cady (vocals, guitar, harmonica), bring to you a little roller coaster show of intense, heartfelt, and sometimes humorous song selections of originals and covered artists. With strong vocal harmonies ranging from old-timey vibes to modern reverberations captured with unique stylistic arrangements and identity. Emily and Chris produce a dynamic sound that resonates a deep connection, which can be felt through their obvious love of making music together, and a special friendship forged more than a decade ago. Each of their distinct styles blending together form a sonic connective that is unmistakably particular and all their own.
Emily has been an active singer/songwriter for the better part of fifteen years and is a uniquely talented professional potter mentored by the late great Shawn Funk. Originally from Spearfish, Emily has spent the bulk of her adult life in Hawaii, Arizona, and Utah, involved with organic farms and co-ops, calling Moab her home for the most part, but always remaining connected to Spearfish. Recently, Emily has been spending more time back in the Black Hills while keeping her new roots in Moab. A founding member of The Queens of King Street, Emily also performs and recently produced a recording with the group based out of Moab, to be released in the near future.
Chris has been a local and regional touring musician for 30 years. As a solo artist and with his bands, Brother Otis, Sweatband, Violent Hippie, and strings-n-tuba, Chris has produced six original recordings through the years. Based out of Spearfish, SD, Chris has called the Black Hills home most of his life. He has been involved in the music industry in many other capacities as an agent, talent buyer, and promoter. Include stage management and event coordination as well. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Black Hills State University and is a creative and professional writer.
